This started with a human problem, not an app.

Companion did not begin in a strategy document. Benjamin V Jones experienced periods of significant pressure, uncertainty and poor mental health. There were times when he knew he needed to communicate what he was thinking or feeling, and could not find the words.

At an important point, another human helped bridge that communication gap. Not a system, not a product — a person who made it possible to say something that had until then stayed unsaid.

“What happens when somebody does not have that person beside them?”

That question did not stay in one place. The same shape of problem started appearing in completely different parts of life and work: information that failed to travel, context that was lost between people, and effort quietly absorbed by whoever happened to be standing there.

A farm, a construction procurement chain, a workplace process, a journey with no signal, a family conversation — different environments, the same underlying failure. Something that mattered was being missed, lost, misunderstood or not carried forward, and a human was compensating for it.

Companion therefore developed into a broader human-first research and technology company: founder-led, Welsh, and deliberately willing to conclude that technology is not the answer to a given problem.
